Day 20. La Sal Loop, Utah

Thursday, Sept 10th.

We had another day in Moab and had many options to choose from. Ultimately, we decided to go for a ride!! Another hot day with temps in the 90's was forecast so we decided to head into and around La Sal mountains. We found good descriptions of the ride online and in short order set out. We managed to find the correct road without too much difficulty, sure enough we started climbing, the scenery became greener and the temperature was cooler.

As we gained altitude we rounded a bend in the road and suddenly encountered quite different scenery below us. Despite having read about it we were still surprised!

This is Castle Rock, located in Castle Valley which lies North East of Moab.

Our route descended into the valley, bringing us closer to the rock

until, finally we were level with it and riding right past. Amazing! This rock has been used for car commercials where they place a car on the top of the rock as well as several movies

Our route then brought us into a canyon and we rode alongside the Colorado river for a while.

Of course we had to get close to this famous river.

Hard to imagine that this is the river responsible for carving the Grand Canyon!

Next up was a short detour down Potash road. We found ourselves riding alongside a sheer rock wall and sure enough, easily found what we had come for:

Petroglyphs!! These are believed to have been carved by the Fremont Indians who lived in this area around 300 - 1300 AD. Some of the carvings may well be even older, dating back to 6,000 BC!!

It was also another good day for wildlife spotting!
