Day 11. Riding the Northern Black Hills to Deadwood, SD

Another beautiful day on tap so we had to take advantage and ride! This time we headed North up to Deadwood.

Photos from the road with the new GoPro (much better than the Drift camera I had been using. This one is mounted on Tom's helmet):

 Incredible roads carving through canyons

All too soon we arrive in Deadwood, where our first stop is coffee - carefully researched on Trip Adviser of course.

This place was brilliant - excellent coffee and cheese & egg croissants for the hungry bikers!

Main Street, Deadwood
Lots of funky bars and shops, sometimes both in the same spot!
Where Wild Bill Hickok was shot, clutching the Dead man's hand.
Doorway into the Saloon

Lots of curios and memorabilia inside

After exploring Deadwood we rode over to Sturgis via another amazing canyon road. Sturgis is the location of the largest motorcycle rally in the world. It takes place in August every year and we missed it by two weeks. This was deliberate rather than bad planning, we just didn't want to share the roads with half a million other bikes! We spent an interesting hour at the excellent motorcycle museum. Other than that the whole town was rather dead - probably still recovering from the onslaught of all those bikers. Inexplicably this is the only photo we took!

A different route back to Keystone dodging rain showers, not ever so successfully, but still an amazing ride and we had a blast. Back at the lodge now, getting ready for an early start tomorrow. We are heading West again!

  1. Wyoming! I've always wanted to go there. Ranked 10th in land area and 50th in population. Erie County has more people! Enjoy the scenery and be safe! (ain't no-one around to help) Btw, did you visit Wild Bill Hickok's grave?
