Day 6. Another Day, Another State

To Cedar Falls, Iowa
KSU: 6:50 - we're getting better!
Trip: 271 miles   Total Trip: 1613 miles
Moving Av: 55mph   Moving Time: 5hrs

Another day of spectacular weather. We got really snarled up in commuter traffic leaving Milwaukee, not helped by multiple road works some of which entailed diversions. Would have been a nightmare if we didn't have GPS. But once clear of the city things opened up and we had an easy ride towards Madison, WI, where once again commuter traffic was out in full force and we got tangled up in road works. We saw more of Madison than planned but once we hit Route 20 it was a straight shot West through open farmland. Very little traffic and we made excellent time to make up for the earlier slow going. We crossed into Iowa by crossing the Mississippi River and we had our picnic at a park on the banks of the river. This was a shorter travel day as we had read about the town of Cedar Falls, Iowa which was described as a funky "hip" town which helped us decide to stop here for the night. Our bible, "Road Trip USA", had mentioned the Blackhawk Hotel and we got a room for the night. This hotel occupies one of the oldest continuously operating hotel sites in the country, having been a hotel at this site since 1850's. It is a lovely old building but we are staying in the more modern "motel" at the back - we love this as it means our babies are right outside our door where we can keep an eye on them.

Mostly empty roads

But sometimes overtaken by large tankers!
