Wednesday, Sept 3rd.
This morning we set off, taking our life in our hands, South down CA Freeway Rte 101. We have decided we do not like California drivers one bit. We felt as though there was a bounty on our skin and everyone was out to get us. After about 35 miles of insanity we were able to pull off into the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. This was a true sanctuary. We were early and there were few other people about. We had seen Redwoods on our route yesterday but today we were able to get off the bikes and take serene woodland paths in and amongst the Giants themselves - truly amazing!
Brief spell of tree hugging
Photos cannot convey the size of these trees - some are over 300' tall
Fallen trees become "nurse trees" for vegetation on the forest floor.
Steinbeck said it best
A cross section of an ancient Redwood - the markers indicate the time in history corresponding to the rings. The first marker is 1000AD - the Vikings discover North America. The outermost maker: 1928 - California State Parks system established. This just gives an idea of the time these trees have stood.

We were lucky enough to have our picnic lunch at a secluded spot amongst the giants - what a privilege! Then we rode back into the fray of Route 101 and made it to Redwood Harley where we bought a replacement indicator bulb for my bike. Then back to our hotel, quick shower and out on foot to explore the town of Eureka which is where we are staying for these two nights. The outer parts of town are "gritty" to say the least and I was saddened to see a number of homeless and down and out folks. Once we got to the "Old Town" we found a delight of well kept / restored old Victorian homes and mansions.
A few drinks and supper and we were back at the hotel for an early night - ready for another action packed day tomorrow.
