Day 19. Cape Flattery, WA

We awoke to another crystal clear, bluebird day - so lucky. We hopped on the bikes and rode to Cape Flattery, the furthest Northwestern tip of the contiguous United States. We passed through a number of small fishing towns

At this point we were quite close to Vancouver Island - clearly seen across the Strait.

And finally reached Neah Bay, home of the Makah Tribe. We were on tribal land and were happy to purchase a recreation pass to enjoy the trails.

A short ride brought us to the trailhead

We set off down a well marked trail that wound through lush green forest until we reached the Cape itself. There was a dense bank of sea fog and we could hear the eerie moan of a fog horn. The views were amazing despite, or perhaps because of, the fog.

At one point the fog lifted enough to see Tatoosh Island which is where the lighthouse and foghorn were situated.

So here we are at last - the mighty Pacific!!

A quick bit of bird spotting completed my day:

 A Pigeon Guillemot
Black Oystercatcher

  1. Hi Tom & Vicky,

Your anniversary is this Thursday, the 24th, right? I know it's sometime around now. Anyway, happy 26th anniversary! I've been checking in, but not commenting recently. Vicky, I'm truly impressed that you can name the flora and fauna on the spot!

Anyway, thanks for the pics and the narrative. Also, thanks Tom for the post card. The girls got a kick out of your remembering them on your trip.

    Love,
    Jim

    1. Hi Jim - Yes! Tomorrow is the day!! Doesn't seem like yesterday since we all got together at St. Andrews. Too bad some of the most important people are no longer with us. Glad the girls enjoyed their post card - another is on it's way.
