Day 4. To Ashland, Wisconsin.

It was 55 degrees outside when we got up!! But a clear blue sky so we did not mind donning the heated gear again and we kept toasty warm as we continued to head West. This is the third time we have headed through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan but this was the only time we have made it dry! The other two times (2014 & 2015) we got soaked and it was miserable. After the second soaking I said I would never come this way again but no matter how I tried I could not find an alternate route that made sense. This is the quickest route and this time it was spectacular.

We found a lovely cup of coffee in Minising, Michigan and walked down for a look at the lake.

We continued down Route 28, joining Route 41 before finally rejoining Route 2. (Sorry Jim - we couldn't find Route 2 for a while either!)

We stopped for a late lunch at a lovely roadside park by the Agate Falls - spectacular!

We arrived at our Motel in Ashland, just over the Wisconsin State border and into the Central Time Zone which meant we gained an hour! Our lodging for the night is the improbably named River Rock Inn & Bait Shop - it is very nice, if somewhat fishy.

The bikes are outside our door - perfect!

We walked into town, had a look around admiring the wonderful town murals.

We had a quick run along the waterfront trail before cleaning up for dinner. We got back just in time to watch the sunset.

A perfect end to a great day.

Trip: 354.1 miles. Odometer: 1292 miles.

  1. This is so fantastic-- murals are amazing. Living vicariously through you two. Nothing quite like the great American road trip!
